Uni-Jay Limited began its operations in the year 1983, on the veranda of a rented single room, in a compound house at Ahinsan, Kumasi. The company, through years of hard work and persistence, has been carefully nurtured to its current position.
Without any higher education, the founder and CEO, Mrs. Janet Abobigu, grew the company through constant learning and tenacity. She completed her elementary schooling at Ahinsan M/A in 1980 and though she yearned to pursue higher education, it was impossible due to her parents’ lack of financial support. Not relenting and determined to make something out life, Mrs. Abobigu turned to become a head porter (kayayei) in order to mobilise funds to start something for herself. When she realised her passion for sewing, the CEO enrolled herself as an apprentice to a seamstress with the money she had accumulated through the ‘head porting’ job. Three years after successfully completing her apprenticeship, Mrs. Abobigu started her own sewing trade with a single hand sewing machine.
Undoubtedly a diligent and an industrious person, the CEO was able to secure an independent external unit, popularly known as “kiosk” where she moved in and with time, took in trainees for apprenticeship.
